1.     We have confirmed that the Grooveshark Page and App outage on Facebook was due to a copyright takedown request issued by a foreign entity. As a fellow US-based DMCA-compliant service, Facebook’s copyright notice and takedown process is very similar to Grooveshark’s. We are working with Facebook to reactivate the Grooveshark Page and App in accordance with their process. In fact, this incident has created an even stronger line of communication and cooperation between our two companies. In the meantime, because Grooveshark has never forced users to login using Facebook, all Grooveshark users are still able to login to the Grooveshark website with their email address — see this article for further direction, or to contact our support team with any questions.

        The total impact of the removal of our Facebook app thus far has been minimal, with less than a 1% impact in overall traffic to Grooveshark from this outage.

  2. It’s Wednesday again, which means we’ve released our latest update. We’re pretty excited about this one. 

    First, we’ve made a small update to our iOS app (available in the Cydia App Store for Jailbroken iDevices) – this release is pretty much a patch that fixes a lot of the minor issues with the last release – it should improve the stability of the iOS app significantly.

    Second, we’ve updated all this bidness in the latest release, plus a lot of not-so-exciting behind-the-scenes stuff:

    • We updated the sign up form in order to — well, keep reading.
    • We killed the Widgets page! All Widget stuff should be do-able on Grooveshark now. Click here for instructions.
    • The Subscriptions Settings Page has gotten a makeover. It now displays more information about your subscription 
    • Survey Registration in the Desktop Application should work 100% better.
    • We’ve made it so that http://grooveshark.com/themes goes to our theme selector.
    • We’ve also added Galego, Eesti, Lietuvių and Cymraeg to our supported languages!

    Finally, touched by the spirit of generosity – which we’re pretty sure is a product of Gift Goddess Oprah Winfrey’s cosmic powers – our developers have decided to give each of you your very own CUSTOM Uniform Resource Locator! Get excited.

    That’s right— when you sign up for Grooveshark, we’re giving you the opportunity to create a custom URL that links you directly to your Grooveshark profile. It’ll look a little something like this:

  3. It’s Thursday, and we’re happy to announce the release of web update RC20. This release doesn’t have any shiny moving parts, but it’s going to improve site performance and enable Grooveshark to be consistently Groovy! 


    But that’s not the only thing we’ve got to announce, on this greatest of great days. Prepare yourself for the best thing that’s happened in the entire month of June… we updated the iPhone app! It’s now in the Cydia App Store.

    Here’s a look at the new home screen:

    That’s right, Grooveshark for iOS 2.3 features the long-awaited My Music section. You can now easily access your entire Grooveshark library from your jailbroken iPhone. There are a ton of other new goodies, too, like:

    • Our adorable new Splash Screen!
    • When you first tap a song, the song doesn’t immediately start playing. Instead, you land on the new Song Menu page. This page allows you to Play the song, Favorite it, Offline it, Share it, and more!
    • In the Player, we’ve replaced the old “Favorite” button with a new “Options” button, allowing you to add or remove favorites/songs from your library, add songs to playlists, or share your tunes with your friends.
    • The app also runs a whole lot faster, and it’s easier to navigate (if you ask us).
    • You can now begin or extend your subscription from the app! We’ve got a secure billing system built right in.
    • We’ve added more Stations to the app (D-d-d-dubstep, 90’s alt rock, and 80’s) and Stations now function more like they do on the site; they’ll change dynamically as you Smile or Frown the song you’re listening to.
    • A lot of things that made the app crash before should no longer do so.
    • The entire Changelog is located here!

    Our mobile developers (all TWO of them) worked long and hard to fix all sorts of bugs in order to provide y’all a crash-free listening experience!

  4. We’d like to take the opportunity to tell you about a lovely utility called Groovylists on this, the most appropriate of days.

    Groovylists is a fairly simple concept. You’ve got playlists in other services, like Spotify, Last.FM, or iTunes. You want to import that playlist over to Grooveshark to take it with you wherever you go! Groovylists makes it extremely easy to do so. Want to see it in action?

    The Desktop App is working again! We broke it pretty hard when we were updating the site for RC13, but our lovely developer, Katy, fixed it up right last night. Thanks to everyone who kept us updated on the issue, we appreciate the input so so much!

    Oh, but then I tripped over the Last.FM Scrobbler that we keep in most inconvenient place in the middle of the office. So now that’s broken — but don’t worry, we’re on it. It should be fixed by Wednesday morning, after we test to make sure the fix won’t break anything else!


    One of the most common requests we get from Mac users is a way to make the native media keys work for Grooveshark. Well, we haven’t quite mastered that art yet, but we found an app that does! It’s called Factotum and it’s available here for a coupla bucks.

  5. Happy Hump Day, everyone! Our web team has been working their butts off trying to make Grooveshark the best site on the whole internets. Here’s what they achieved this week!


    IE-Related Fixes:

    • The ‘Cancel Subscription’ button works in IE7
    • IE8 runs in IE8 mode, which should increase performance significantly — like, playback should no longer stutter when you do intensive things like load big lists.

    Site Stuff:

    • Search results are improved!
    • Changing your queue size with music in the queue won’t lock the site up. 
    • Fixed the issue where stations and playlists would sometimes display all jumbled up in the sidebar.
    • The theme selector is now organized by category.
    • Search results are improved!
    • Artist page popularity sorting is fixed!
    • Playing an album from the site skin should always play in track order. WHOO!

    Oh, yeah, and the most awesome announcement of the day: We’re happy to announce that we’ve partnered up with Clearvoice Surveys to offer Grooveshark Surveys

    You may see a lil’ notification that informs you of the new program, but if you don’t, check out the Surveys option in your User Menu (you may need a magnifying glass to see it in this picture, haha).



    The Surveys page is currently offering the initial Profile Survey, which determines your eligibility for future surveys. New surveys will be released intermittently, and you’ll receive an e-mail informing you about their release. Once you take that first survey, you’ll be sent an e-mail asking for you to authorize your account. You’ll need to do that in order to receive any additional surveys going forward. When you finish a survey, you’ll earn points that you can collect and redeem for free months of Grooveshark Plus or Grooveshark Anywhere! So check it out.

  6. Hey everyone, it’s that time of week again!

    First things first — according to the Web team, we’ve achieved a great advance in site performance. For IE users, the site will load up to 2 seconds faster, Firefox will load 1.5 seconds faster, and Chrome users will have a loading time that’s been decreased by 0.2 seconds. Tiny but extremely significant gains, if you ask us.

    Facebook login should work a lot better.

    We fixed the issue in IE where the theme would leak through the search page, and some bugs in IE8 specifically that will let us make huge performance advances in IE by as early as next week.

    Last but not least, we’ve released a ridiculously cool new feature for all you Grooveshark-loving party animals. Meet Chanel:

    Chanel’s one of our web developers and also one of the most jovial people I’ve ever met in my entire life. One night, while responsibly enjoying an adult beverage, Chanel, a true visionary, thought it would be a great idea if Grooveshark could power a Power Hour. Putting his skills to great use, he’s done just that. Grooveshark Plus and Anywhere members, feast your eyes on —- Power Hour Mode. (Also, check it out, the queue size selector is back for those of you with smaller resolutions!)

    Set up a playlist, activate power hour mode, and boom. No more having to check clocks or turn cumbersome hourglasses. The song you’re listening to will end after one minute, alerting everyone present that it’s that time again.


  7. UPDATE: Looks like one of our service providers, Level 3, momentarily blinked off. Out of our hands, but everything’s good now!

    Hey y’all — we forgot to feed Pickles this morning, so he got a little rambunctious in our server closet. As a result, we’re going to be down for a little bit. 

    Our interns are going to get enough bamboo to sate Pickles’ rumbly belly and our systems guys are working as hard as they can to fix the mauled servers. Hang with us, we’ll be back soon!


  8. Good news! We just released updates to three of our mobile platforms: iPhone, Symbian, and Android. Check out the new features and bug fixes in these updates.

    iPhone v. 2.2.0, available in Cydia:

    Bugs Fixed:

    • Loading playlists on older devices is fixed
    • General stability increased
    • Your favorites now load more quickly.
    • Better offline stability.
    • Improved playback buffering.
    • Improved sorting performance.
    • Radio station (user or tag) persists between sessions.
    •  Overall increase in app responsiveness.

    • New “Refresh” feature! Sync changes to your playlists and favorited songs from the cloud in seconds.

  9. Earlier today Grooveshark had some problems that you might have experienced while listening to music. Our very own Colin Hostert was nice enough to sit down and explain a bit about what happened.

    We use two pieces of software on each of our webservers. One does all the hard work and runs all the backend code (Apache), the other efficiently servers up static content and caches code that rarely changes (Nginx).

    The caching software has a set amount of space to store all the data it needs to serve up the cached content. Up until today 1GB was more than enough to keep things humming and we couldnt imagine ever filling it up. Now we can imagine filling it up easily. We are still trying to figure out what exactly caused it to suddenly fill up, but we increased it to four times the original size, and decreased how long we cache stuff for. In addition we are taking every step possible so that the machines will email us and text us threatening things if this ever starts to get full again.

    Trust us, we know how much not having your playlists for a few hours can suck—we suffer along with you, since we don’t have any music to play while working hard to fix it!  Sorry again about the hiccup, and serious thanks to Nate, Ed , Myke, and Travis for the help in getting it all fixed today.

     tl;dr -  Cache filled up, wont happen again.


  10. You guys know that we are working hard to fix the things that piss you off have been problematic in the new Grooveshark. A lot of updates have been made, but among them:

    • Anyone with a space in their password was unable to login because of the app wanting to take control of the spacebar for player controls can now, uh, login again. 
    • Scrobbling from Grooveshark has been updated to support the updates that Last.fm made recently to how music services (like us!) submit tunes you play over to your Last.fm account. 
    • A bug that forced users to log in immediately after signing up for a Grooveshark account is no more. 

    I should also mention that we’ve started a new release protocol for updates to Grooveshark, so it’ll be a lot easier for us to let you know exactly what’s been changed. Starting now!

    Oh, and while we were updating, we decided to throw up a nifty new holiday theme.
